New Year, ready for New Spaces

I love the freshness of a new year – setting up resolutions, creating goals and making plans. It reminds me of the excitement and anticipation of the first day of school.

This year, I have declared that it is a New Year, ready for New Spaces.

Getting more organized is a very popular New Year’s Resolution. And what a great one! Getting more organized can mean less stress, more space and even a better mood. But something tells me this is one of those resolutions that begins to come apart at the seams somewhere around February. (Or perhaps already by now!)

Why is that?

When you write out “get organized” – that is a very broad resolution. In my experience, the more specific the goal the easier to plan how to reach it. For example, I grew up loving to read in grade school. However after being exhausted by reading in school, I didn’t take this love into my adult years. I may have only read one book a year! Then in 2014, I made the resolution to read 12 books in a year. Check on specific goal!

I knew I had to force the opening in my time. I began decreasing screen time, especially at night before bed. This gave me a window to get through a few pages when I wasn’t truly “busy”. The second part I needed was accountability. I started a book club with some of my closest girlfriends. The Book Club Biatches  – and we are still together to this day two years later! It’s been a great excuse to keep up socially as well as talk about our favorite parts in the book we’re reading. (Completely entrenched in What Alice Forgot right now by one my new favorite authors, Liane Moriarty.)

So how can you make the right changes to make “getting organized” actually happen this year?

That’s it. That’s the secret formula.

Whether it’s 20 minutes every evening (your phone has a timer) or 2 hours every Friday morning – you must make the time to work on your clutter projects. Accountability can happen a few different ways – to family and friends or maybe event through Facebook or Instagram. Social Media is a great way to keep yourself accountable because you’re putting it out there for the world to see! Heck, throw a sign outside the front of your house – that would motivate me!

A Professional Organizer is another great way to stay accountable but clearly, I’m a little biased. =-)
